The bird theory says the three birds in Rockstar's first GTA 6 teaser image stand for GTA 5's three protagonists flying off, and that two birds in later key art stand for Jason and Lucia. Rockstar has never explained the birds, so it is unknown.
Fans have been reading the birds since the teaser dropped in December 2023. Kotaku's roundup at the time listed three ideas: three playable characters like GTA 5, a hint at Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds" in the trailer, or no meaning at all. The first two turned out wrong.
The current version comes from a June 25, 2026 r/GTA6 post by Lazy-Owl-5148: the three birds are Michael, Trevor and Franklin leaving, and two birds in a later piece of key art are Jason and Lucia arriving. That is a reading of the art, not a prediction, so it can't really be proven or disproven unless Rockstar comments.
Variants that read the birds as a secret third playable character have nothing behind them: Rockstar describes two protagonists.
Evidence for
- Rockstar's December 1, 2023 teaser image, announcing the first trailer, shows palm trees and three birds flying into the sunset. (GTA 6's Teaser Image Has Three Birds I Can't Stop Thinking About (Kotaku), Dec 1, 2023)
- GTA 6 has two protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, which fits the 'two birds' half of the theory. (Grand Theft Auto VI: Only in Leonida (Rockstar Games), Oct 5, 2026)
Evidence against
- Kotaku's view at the time: it is 'far more likely' the birds are just part of the artwork and mean nothing at all. (GTA 6's Teaser Image Has Three Birds I Can't Stop Thinking About (Kotaku), Dec 1, 2023)
- An earlier reading, that the birds hinted at Bob Marley's 'Three Little Birds' in Trailer 1, missed: Kotaku notes Trailer 1 used a Tom Petty song from Full Moon Fever. (GTA 6 Fans Think The Moon Is Telling Them When The Next Trailer Will Arrive (Kotaku), Nov 18, 2024)
