GTA 6 vs GTA 5: The Biggest Confirmed Differences (2026)

GTA 6 changes almost every headline feature of GTA 5: two leads instead of three, a Miami-inspired state about twice the size of GTA 5's map, and Red Dead Redemption 2 style systems for health, wildlife and reputation. It also launches only on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, as a single-player game, with no online mode announced yet.

Here is every major difference Rockstar has confirmed so far, set against what GTA 5 did in 2013.

1. Leonida is about twice the size

GTA 5 was set in Los Santos and Blaine County. GTA 6 moves to Leonida, Rockstar's Florida-inspired state, with Vice City as the main city. Rockstar's Aaron Garbut told Game Informer that Leonida is about twice the size of GTA 5's map and the biggest world Rockstar has built. Rockstar has not given a square-mile figure (how the two maps compare). It is split into six regions, from the Leonida Keys to Mount Kalaga National Park.

The world is busier too: more than 170 animal species, hurricanes and tropical storms, and weather that can differ from one part of the map to another (Game Informer; VGC).

2. Two leads, and switching is instant

GTA 5 let you rotate between three criminals, each with a special ability. Switching meant the camera zooming out over the map and back down to the next character.

GTA 6 has two leads, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, and Rockstar described a switch that happens instantly, even inside the same car: drive as Jason, then swap to Lucia in the passenger seat to shoot at pursuers (Dazed via Notebookcheck; SVG). You can switch at any time while exploring, though some story moments may lock it (IGN).

The other big change is the relationship. Jason and Lucia can live together, text each other, team up for jobs and hold hands. Whether they become a couple depends on time spent together outside missions (IGN).

3. Six wanted stars that track what police know

GTA 5 capped the wanted level at five stars. GTA 6 brings back six (IGN; SVG). The bigger change is underneath the stars:

• A crime has to be witnessed or set off an alarm before police respond.
• Icons under the stars show what police know: your appearance, your outfit, your vehicle, and whether they are looking for a couple.
• Hollow stars mean they do not know what you look like.
• Masks, a full change of clothes or a different car can each wipe a piece of that description.

4. Red Dead Redemption 2 DNA

Many of GTA 6's new systems borrow from Rockstar's western (IGN preview):

• Eating restores health, and overeating or hitting the gym changes your character's build.
• Animals can be studied and logged, as in Red Dead Redemption 2.
• A Criminal Profile tracks your behaviour, a loose cousin of Red Dead's honour system. Even small acts, like throwing away your trash, count.
• Talking to strangers uses prompts like greet, taunt, defuse and provoke.
• Slow-motion shots are replayed from cinematic angles.

5. Stealing cars and making money

In GTA 5, breaking into a parked car was a quick animation. GTA 6 sorts cars into tiers. Older cars need a slim jim, newer prestige models need tools such as a key cloner, and some cars stay out of reach until later in the story. A phone app called WAINK scans a car to show its value, locks, alarm and tracker (IGN).

Money also matters more to the story. Rockstar says you will sometimes need to raise a set amount to keep main missions moving, through car boosting, store robberies, hold-ups and bank jobs. Stolen goods go to fences, another Red Dead idea (IGN).

6. A much longer story

HowLongToBeat's players average about 32 hours for GTA 5's main story. Rockstar North's Rob Nelson said his own GTA 6 playthrough took about 80 hours, including some optional goals (IGN; Polygon). That is one developer's run, not an average, but it points to a far bigger campaign.

7. Platforms, PC and online

GTA 5 launched on PS3 and Xbox 360, reached PS4 and Xbox One in November 2014 and PC in April 2015, and was later upgraded for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. GTA Online arrived on October 1, 2013, two weeks after launch, free with every copy (Rockstar Newswire).

GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. There is no PS4, Xbox One or PC version announced (Rockstar Support). Rockstar calls it a single-player experience, and the PlayStation Store lists it as one player with offline play. Twitch's CEO told Bloomberg a multiplayer mode is coming next year; Rockstar has not confirmed that (Polygon; TweakTown).

Performance is reported, not confirmed: Digital Foundry measured the Extended Look at 30fps on PS5, and Rob Nelson was reported as saying the console versions run at 30fps.

8. Buying it

GTA 6 costs $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the digital-only Ultimate Edition in the US (Xbox Store). The boxed version is a download code with no disc (Rockstar Support). Rockstar also told Kinda Funny there are no microtransactions in GTA 6 at launch (IGN).

GTA 5 sets a high bar: Take-Two says it has sold in more than 230 million copies (Game Developer; Reuters).

What hasn't changed

The satire. IGN's preview counted more radio and TV ads than in any earlier GTA, and Rockstar has a dedicated team in Los Angeles writing pedestrian chatter (Kotaku). Rockstar says the humour won't lean heavily on specific memes or political issues, because those date quickly over a long development (IGN).
