How to make money in GTA 6, from what Rockstar has shown: car boosting, robberies, bank jobs and fences, and why some story missions wait for your cash.
You make money in GTA 6 by boosting and selling cars, holding up businesses, robbing stores and pulling bank jobs, then selling what you steal to a fence. That is what Rockstar North showed IGN in August, and Rockstar adds that some main missions wait until you have raised a set amount of cash, so money matters to the story this time.
Nothing on this page is tested yet. GTA 6 is out on November 19, 2026, and from launch week we rank every method by what it paid us per hour. We never list glitches or exploits.
How money works in GTA 6
Rockstar told IGN it wants money to matter more to the story than in any earlier GTA. Rob Nelson, co-head of Rockstar North, put it plainly to the YouTuber TGG: there are points where the game will "slow down the flow or stop the flow until you hit certain cash goals" (as quoted by TweakTown). So earning is not optional side content.
What you steal goes into a duffel bag, and most of it has to be sold to a fence before it is money you can spend. Fences specialise: one buys cars, another jewellery (IGN). Rockstar's edition announcement adds that every personal garage has a secure spot to leave stolen goods for the local fence, who takes most of them "at a reasonably discounted rate" (TheSixthAxis). As we read it, the garage trades some of the price for convenience. TweakTown's summary of the same TGG interview lists three ways to hold money: cash in your pocket, which can be lost; an ATM card; and a digital balance in a phone app called BuckMe. Polygon adds that early looks suggest you can only carry a limited amount of cash.
Five kinds of robbery, smallest to biggest
| Kind | What Rockstar described | What we know |
|---|---|---|
| Local stores | Payday loan shops, phone repair shops, convenience stores | Pay a few thousand dollars and usually don't show on the map |
| Jewelry stores | Classic jewelry store stick-ups | Loot goes to a jewelry fence |
| Banks | Bank jobs, one of the four main earners IGN names | Some need a safe combination you find on site |
| Mini heists | Robbing security vans and cash transport vehicles | Not detailed yet |
| Compounds | Gang hideouts holding drugs, money and guns | One, the PTT Youngin$ Compound, is an Ultimate Edition extra |
From TweakTown's write-up of TGG's interview with Rockstar. Nelson says you hear about many targets "through people telling you during the course of the game", and the little gas stations are not even marked. IGN adds the catches: police can gather outside a store or bank and wait for you, though many have a back door, and a car fence may tip you off to a police impound full of cars worth stealing. Hunting is one more earner, opened through a friend of Jason's (GameSpot).
What to do on day one
- Scan a car with the WAINK phone app before you take it. IGN reports it shows the car's value, what it costs to register, whether it is locked or alarmed, and whether it carries a tracker that calls the police if you drive slowly.
- Deliver stolen cars clean. Damage lowers what a fence pays, and GTA 6's narrow, busy streets make that harder than it sounds.
- Hunt for the safe combination when police are far away. Explosives open a safe faster but damage the loot inside (IGN).
- Bank big takes before you do anything risky, since cash you carry can be lost. That is our advice from TweakTown's summary, not a tested rule.
- Rob as a couple when you can. IGN reports it also builds Jason and Lucia's relationship, so one job earns you two things.
Our beginner tips cover the police side: masks, a spare outfit in the trunk and hollow wanted stars all decide whether you keep the money.
What we'll add at launch
- Every method ranked by what it paid us per hour, with the platform and the point in the story we tested it.
- Which robberies appear on the map and which you only hear about from people.
- What the big purchases are. Rockstar has not said what big-money items exist, and TweakTown notes it acknowledged GTA 5 left players too little to spend on.
- Whether a money cheat exists. GTA 5 had none (GamesRadar+), and we expect the same.
What we expect GTA 6's money to feel like
Our take: money in GTA 6 looks scarcer and more hands-on than in GTA 5, and that's a good thing for the story. In GTA 5, the big fortunes came from heists and from playing the in-game stock market around Lester's assassination missions, then sat in property that paid out every week (IGN's GTA 5 guide). Every money method Rockstar has shown for GTA 6 is a crime you commit yourself: boosting cars, holding up businesses, robbing stores, bank jobs, plus hunting, which Rob Nelson described as one more way to earn (GameSpot). Rockstar also told IGN some main missions will wait until you've raised a set amount. Our guess, until we can test it, is that car boosting will be the steady early earner, because cars are everywhere and the older tiers only need a slim jim, while robberies pay more and risk more. Don't hunt for a money cheat: GTA 5 had none, because the economy was part of the story (GamesRadar+), and we expect the same.
GTA 5's money next to GTA 6's
| GTA 5 | GTA 6, from previews | |
|---|---|---|
| Biggest earners | Story heists, and playing the stock market around Lester's assassination missions | Robberies of five sizes, car boosting and bank jobs, done when you choose |
| Steady income | Properties that paid out every week | Not announced |
| Money and the story | Heists paid out as the story went | Some main missions wait until you raise a set amount |
| Money cheats | None | Not known; Rockstar hasn't mentioned cheats |
GTA 5: IGN's GTA 5 guide and GamesRadar+. GTA 6: IGN's preview and TweakTown's write-up of TGG's interview with Rockstar.
The row we'd watch is the second one. GTA 5's weekly property income made money passive by the late game, and TweakTown reports Rockstar acknowledging that GTA 5 didn't give players enough to spend it on. Nothing announced for GTA 6 pays you for doing nothing, and until it does, the money you have is the money you went out and took.

Questions people ask
How do you make money in GTA 6?

At times, yes. Rockstar told IGN that some main missions wait until you have raised a set amount of cash, and Rob Nelson told TGG the game can stop the story until you hit certain cash goals.
Is there a money cheat in GTA 6?
None is known, and we doubt one will exist. GTA 5 had no money cheat at all, and Rockstar has not mentioned cheats for GTA 6. Any list of GTA 6 money codes online is made up until the game is out.
