What Rockstar has shown

The clearest alligator moment so far is a phone clip in Trailer 1: a man hauls a gator out of a backyard pool while the caption warns Vice City to "check for uninvited guests before the pool party". In Game Informer's September 2026 cover story, Rockstar then listed alligators with flamingos, manatees and pelicans as native Florida species living in Leonida, part of a roster of more than 170.

Gators turn up all over Rockstar's marketing, not only in the wild:

• A screenshot of Grassrivers, the game's Everglades, shows captured gators in the back of a pickup, IGN notes.
• The Ultimate Edition's Goodtime Gear clothing line is themed on "Macca the Gator", a TV character from the "Goodtime State", per the PlayStation Store listing.
• Rockstar's Cal Hampton screenshot puts him on an alligator-themed mini golf course.
• Kotaku reads a large alligator park in the marketing as a nod to Gatorland, south of Orlando.

The real Florida behind them

Florida's wildlife agency (FWC) says alligators live in all 67 of the state's counties. They prefer fresh water lakes, slow rivers and wetlands, turn up in brackish water, and only rarely go into the sea. Rockstar's Michael Kane told Game Informer the animal team wanted every species "accurately researched", so the swamps and inland canals are a better bet than Ocean Beach.

Compared with Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar has done gators before. Red Dead Redemption 2 put them in Lemoyne's bayou, including a Legendary Bull Gator you could track near Lagras (IGN). GTA 6 brings back Red Dead's tracking with Rare, Discoverable and Legendary tiers, Game Informer reports, but Rockstar is keeping the rare and legendary animals secret.

Our take: the alligator is Leonida's mascot as much as its wildlife. It is a trailer gag, a TV character on your shirt, a mini golf hazard and a theme park, so expect it in jokes and side content as often as in the swamp. In the wild, treat slow water in Grassrivers as gator country until launch shows how aggressive they are. A Legendary gator in the spirit of Red Dead's Bull Gator is our best guess for one of Rockstar's secret animals, but that is a guess. Hunting does pay in GTA 6, Rob Nelson told TGG (via GameSpot), yet nobody has said which species count, so don't plan a gator income yet.

What to watch for at launch

• Whether alligators attack on land, in the water, or both.
• Whether they can be studied for the animal checklist, and whether one is Legendary.
• Where Macca the Gator shows up: TV, billboards or a theme park.
• Whether alligators count toward hunting income (our hunting rumor check).
