GTA 6 Budget and Sales: Cost, Pre-Orders and Forecasts
The short answer
GTA 6's budget isn't public; analysts estimate $1 billion to $1.5 billion. What Take-Two has said, pre-order estimates, forecasts and GTA 5's records.

Nobody outside Take-Two knows what GTA 6 cost to make. Take-Two has never given a figure, and its CEO, Strauss Zelnick, would only say "it was expensive"; the most-cited estimate, from analysts quoted by Business Insider in May, is $1 billion to $1.5 billion. GTA 6 has not made any sales money yet either, because it comes out on November 19, 2026; everything you see about pre-order revenue is an outside estimate.
What Take-Two has actually said
- No budget. Take-Two "declined to comment or confirm a dollar amount for the development of GTA VI" to Fortune, and Zelnick admitted only that "it was expensive" (IGN).
- No pre-order numbers. Take-Two calls the start of pre-orders "exceptional" but gives no units or revenue, and Zelnick told analysts in August: "we haven't sold one unit yet. You can cancel a preorder."
- A forecast for the year. Take-Two expects net bookings of $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion for its fiscal year ending March 2027, set in May and repeated on August 7, "driven by the November 19th launch of Grand Theft Auto VI". Net bookings is Take-Two's own sales measure, not profit, and the figure covers everything Take-Two sells, from NBA 2K to its mobile games.
- On price, Zelnick said GTA 6 "will be an incredible bargain" at $79.99, and that "pricing has not kept pace with inflation" (TechRadar).
The budget numbers you'll see, and where they come from
| Figure | Who says it | How much to trust it |
|---|---|---|
| $1 billion to $1.5 billion | Unnamed industry analysts, quoted by Business Insider in May 2026 and repeated by IGN and Fortune | The best-sourced estimate, but still a guess from outside |
| $2 billion | No named analyst or report; it has circulated on forums and social media since 2022 | Game Rant found nothing concrete behind it |
| $3 billion or more | A YouTuber's total of Rockstar's UK wage filings since 2019, reported by Destructoid | Those wages pay for every Rockstar project, GTA Online included, so it isn't a GTA 6 budget |
GTA 6 next to GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2
| GTA 5 (2013) | Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) | GTA 6 (2026) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reported budget | $265 million for development and marketing, per The Scotsman; $200 million to $250 million by analysts' estimates (Reuters) | No reliable figure | $1 billion to $1.5 billion by analysts' estimates |
| First days of sales | Over $1 billion in retail sales in three days (Take-Two) | Over $725 million in three days (Take-Two) | Out November 19 |
| Sold in to date | Over 230 million copies (Zelnick, August 2026) | Over 85 million (Take-Two, May 2026, via Game Developer) | Pre-orders only |
GTA 5's three days and Red Dead's are not quite equal: Take-Two notes that GTA 5 launched on a Tuesday and Red Dead on a Friday.
Pre-orders: estimates, not results
Pre-orders opened on June 25. The best-documented estimate is Newzoo's: about $180 million in digital pre-orders in the first week across the US and Europe's five biggest markets, which it scaled to roughly $260 million worldwide. Newzoo also pushed back on viral claims, writing that "GTA 6 has not done a billion dollars in preorders".
Launch forecasts
- Newzoo: $3.3 billion to $5.2 billion in sales by the end of launch week, with about $4.5 billion as its central case.
- Piper Sandler: more than 45 million copies at launch, a model Wccftech itself called "a bit excessive".
- Konvoy, in July 2025: $7.6 billion in the first 60 days (GameSpot), which Newzoo calls the most bullish public forecast.
When we'll know the real numbers
Take-Two hasn't dated its next earnings report. Data sites such as MarketBeat estimate November 5, but that quarter ends on September 30, so it can only cover pre-launch business. The first real GTA 6 sales figure will most likely come as a Take-Two press release after launch: GTA 5's $1 billion came three days in, and Red Dead's $725 million four days after its launch. We'll update this page the day Take-Two publishes one.
Our take: the budget question gets more attention than it deserves, because the answer can't be checked and doesn't change what you pay. The $1 billion to $1.5 billion estimate is the only one with analysts behind it, and even its top end is less than half of Newzoo's lowest launch-week forecast. The number we'd watch is the first one Take-Two puts in a press release: if GTA 6 beats GTA 5's $1 billion in three days, Take-Two will want to say so quickly, and a silent first week would tell its own story.
