Flocks of flamingos wade and take off over the wetlands in Trailer 1. Rockstar named them in its Game Informer interview too.

What Rockstar has shown

Flamingos were among the first animals Rockstar showed for GTA 6. About 21 seconds into Trailer 1, a flock wades through shallow wetland water and lifts off, the shot that told everyone the game was going back to Florida. In Game Informer's cover story Rockstar named flamingos as one of Leonida's native species, alongside manatees, pelicans and alligators, and said the game has more than 60 kinds of bird.

They won't be the only pink bird in the marsh. IGN's list of animals spotted in Rockstar's footage and screenshots also includes spoonbills, storks and cranes.

The real Florida twist

Calling flamingos native is a small statement. Florida's wild flocks were wiped out by the feather trade more than 100 years ago, and for decades scientists assumed any flamingo seen in the state had escaped from a zoo or a racetrack, an Audubon Florida scientist writes (FIU News, from The Conversation). That view changed. Hurricane Idalia blew a flock of 300 to 400 flamingos off course in August 2023, a survey six months later counted at least 100 still in the state, and a flock of 125 was photographed in Florida Bay in July 2025.

In other words, Rockstar's Leonida has flamingos at the moment real Florida is getting them back.

Compared with Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 had about 200 species, and a University of Exeter study found its players were better than non-players at naming real animals from photos, scoring 10 out of 15 on average against 7 (BBC News). The game's animals include birds such as the roseate spoonbill. GTA 6 keeps Red Dead's "study" system, so the same could happen with Florida's birds.

Our take: flamingos are scenery first. They set the postcard mood in Trailer 1, and we expect them in shallow, open water in Grassrivers and the Keys rather than in the city, because that is where Rockstar showed them and where real flocks feed. For the animal checklist, take a second look before you log one: Leonida also has spoonbills, and the two are easy to confuse from a distance. With 60+ bird types, Polygon thinks a birdwatching side activity is likely. We'd call that a fair hope, not a promise; Rockstar has not said whether birds can be studied from far away or with the phone camera.

What to watch for at launch

  • Whether flamingos can be studied at a distance, or only up close.
  • Whether flocks react to boats, airboats and gunfire.
  • Whether flamingos are a Discoverable or Rare animal in Rockstar's tiers.
