GTA 6 Shark Cards and Microtransactions: What Is Known

The short answer

No Shark Cards are announced for GTA 6. Rockstar told Kinda Funny the game has no monetization at launch, yet both stores flag in-game purchases.

No Shark Cards have been announced for GTA 6. Rockstar told Kinda Funny during its August preview that there are "no monetizations in this game", as IGN and Game Rant reported, and GTA 6 launches as a single-player game with no online mode, which is where Shark Cards have always lived.

Two store labels muddy that, and GTA Online's own Shark Cards raise a separate question about your money. Both are below.

What Rockstar said, and what the stores say

Claim Source Status
"No monetizations in this game" Rockstar to Kinda Funny, August 2026 Reported by IGN and Game Rant
"In-game purchases optional" PlayStation Store listing Confirmed
"Offers in-app purchases" Xbox Store listing Confirmed
A paid Ultimate Edition Upgrade PlayStation Store add-on Confirmed
Shark Cards for GTA 6 or a GTA 6 online mode Nobody Not announced

The store labels look like a contradiction. Neither store explains them, and Rockstar has not either. The only paid extra listed for GTA 6 so far is the Ultimate Edition Upgrade, which turns the Standard Edition into the Ultimate Edition, and our reading is that the labels cover that add-on. IGN read Rockstar's answer as being about the single-player release, and as another sign that Rockstar is not ready to talk about a new GTA Online.

What Shark Cards are today

Shark Cards are GTA Online's real-money currency packs on GTA 5: you pay on the PlayStation, Xbox or PC store and get GTA$ to spend in GTA Online. GTA+ members get their own Shark Cards with 15% extra GTA$, according to the Rockstar Store. Take-Two told investors on August 7, 2026 that recurrent consumer spending on the GTA series, the money players keep spending after buying a game, grew 3% in its last quarter.

Will your Shark Card money carry over?

Nothing says it will, and Rockstar's own rules point the other way:

  • Bought GTA$ cannot move between console families even inside GTA Online: Rockstar Support says unspent purchased GTA$ is not eligible for transfer from PS4 to Xbox Series X|S, or from Xbox One to PS5.
  • When GTA Online closed on PS3 and Xbox 360 in December 2021, Rockstar Support said Shark Card purchases could not be refunded or transferred, because virtual currency is platform-specific.

Our character transfer page covers what you can move today.

Can you buy money for GTA 6?

Not from Rockstar. There is no GTA 6 currency on sale on any store, so a site selling "GTA 6 money", "GTA 6 accounts" or modded saves is not selling anything Rockstar offers.

Our take: take Rockstar at its word for the story mode, and expect a GTA 6 online mode to make money the way GTA Online does, through some form of currency or membership. That is how GTA Online has paid for 13 years of updates, and Take-Two's results show it still works. Until Rockstar says how GTA 6 Online will work, do not buy Shark Cards now hoping the GTA$ will follow you. Spend them on GTA Online if you play GTA Online, and nowhere else.

Questions people ask

Will GTA 6 have Shark Cards?

None are announced. Rockstar told Kinda Funny there are no monetizations in GTA 6, which launches as a single-player game. Shark Cards belong to GTA Online, and no GTA 6 online mode has been announced.

Does GTA 6 have microtransactions?

Not at launch, according to Rockstar's answer to Kinda Funny, as reported by IGN and Game Rant. The one paid extra announced is the Ultimate Edition Upgrade.

Why do the stores say GTA 6 has in-game purchases?

The PlayStation Store lists in-game purchases as optional and the Xbox Store says the game offers in-app purchases. Neither says what they are, and the only paid add-on listed so far is the Ultimate Edition Upgrade.

Will my Shark Card money carry over to GTA 6?

Nothing says it will. Rockstar Support treats bought GTA$ as tied to its platform, and when GTA Online closed on PS3 and Xbox 360, Shark Card balances could not be refunded or moved.

Can you buy GTA$ or money for GTA 6?

Not from Rockstar. No GTA 6 currency is on sale anywhere, so anyone selling GTA 6 money, accounts or modded saves is not selling something Rockstar offers.
