GTA 6 Online Character Transfer: Will Progress Carry Over?

No transfer from GTA Online to GTA 6 has been announced. Rockstar has not announced an online mode for GTA 6 at all, and GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 as a single-player game, so there is nowhere for a GTA Online character to go yet.

Your character is not going anywhere either: GTA Online on GTA 5 keeps running. Here is what Rockstar lets you move today, and what happened the one time it closed a version of GTA Online.

What Rockstar lets you move today

From Rockstar Support's two pages on GTA Online transfers:

• A profile on PS4 or Xbox One can be migrated once to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, even across families (PS4 to Xbox Series X|S works).
• Profiles cannot be migrated between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
• No profile moves from a PlayStation or Xbox to PC.
• Unspent GTA$ that you paid for cannot cross from PlayStation to Xbox, or from Xbox to PlayStation.
• After migrating, your profile remains on the PS4 or Xbox One, and the two copies no longer sync.

Since June 18, 2026, PS4 owners of GTA 5 and Xbox One owners of a digital copy can download the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version free, and IGN notes that progress migrates across as before.

The last time a GTA Online version closed

When Rockstar ended GTA Online on PS3 and Xbox 360 on December 16, 2021, Rockstar Support answered the transfer question directly: no, "there is no feature available to transfer character data or progress from those platforms". Shark Card purchases could not be refunded or moved either, because Rockstar treats virtual currency and goods as specific to their platform. That is the only precedent there is, and it went against players.

Will anything carry over to GTA 6 Online?

Rockstar has not said, and there is nothing to read yet: no online mode, no platforms, no word on rewards for GTA Online players. A carry-over of some kind, such as a bonus for long-time players, is possible, but any site promising your money, cars or rank will move across is guessing.

Our take: assume a fresh start. GTA 6 is a new game on a new map, Rockstar's rules today keep even PS5 and Xbox profiles apart, and its only precedent for a closing version of GTA Online was no transfer at all. Keep enjoying your GTA Online character in GTA Online, where it stays. What we would avoid is buying Shark Cards now as a down payment on GTA 6 Online, since nothing says that money will follow you.
