GTA 6 Online: Will It Be Free or Paid?

Nobody knows yet. Rockstar has not announced GTA 6 Online, so it has not said whether online play will be free, included with GTA 6, sold as its own game or tied to a subscription. GTA 6 itself is a paid single-player game, from $79.99 in the US.

What is known is how Rockstar sells GTA Online today, which is the closest guide there is.

How Rockstar sells GTA Online now

Way to get it	Since	Status
Included with GTA 5	2013	Confirmed
On its own, without GTA 5's story, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S	March 15, 2022	Confirmed, Rockstar Newswire
Free on PS5 for its first three months	March 15 to June 14, 2022	Reported by GameSpot and GTABase
GTA+, an optional monthly membership with GTA$ and perks	2022	Confirmed, $7.99 a month on the US Xbox Store

GTA Online has also been sold inside GTA 5 and on its own at the same time, so "free or paid" has never been a single answer. A future GTA 6 online mode could follow any of those routes. Rockstar has not said which.

Is GTA 6 Online a subscription?

No subscription has been announced. The subscription people mean is GTA+, which already exists for GTA Online on GTA 5: the Xbox Store lists it at $7.99 a month and calls it "the premium Membership for GTA Online players". Digital pre-orders of GTA 6 come with one free month of it, which renews at the normal price unless you cancel. See our GTA+ page.

Do you need Netflix for GTA 6?

No. The idea comes from Netflix's part in the marketing: Netflix premiered Rockstar's gameplay video, An Extended Look, on August 27, 2026, and Take-Two's CEO said it would reach Rockstar's YouTube channel six hours later. That was a video premiere. Nothing on Rockstar's site or the PlayStation and Xbox store listings says you need Netflix to play GTA 6 or any online mode.

What Take-Two has said about money

Very little about GTA 6 online play. On its August 7, 2026 call, Take-Two's CEO said only that the company is "not talking about" what comes after the launch yet. Reporting on the same call (GodisaGeek) notes that Take-Two's outlook for the year did not include a separate figure for a new GTA Online. The only outside claim about timing, from Twitch's CEO, says nothing about price.

Our take: expect GTA 6 Online to cost something, one way or another. GTA Online has never been free-to-play: it has come with a game you paid for, been sold on its own, and had a free window on PS5 to pull players in. A free-to-play GTA 6 Online would be a first for Rockstar, so treat any "free" or price claim as a guess until Rockstar posts one. If you want online play on console, also budget for PS Plus or Game Pass, which most paid games need for online play; our PS Plus and Game Pass page explains why.
