GTA 6 and GTA Online: Will GTA Online Shut Down?

The short answer

No shutdown is announced. Take-Two's CEO said in August he expects to keep supporting GTA Online, and GTA 6 pre-orders still come with a GTA+ month.

No. Rockstar has not announced any end date for GTA Online, and Take-Two's CEO told investors in August 2026 that the company expects to keep supporting it after GTA 6 arrives. GTA Online on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC keeps running, and GTA 6 does not replace it.

GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 as a single-player game with no online mode of its own, so for now GTA Online on GTA 5 is the only GTA multiplayer there is.

What Take-Two said

On Take-Two's earnings call on August 7, 2026, an analyst asked whether GTA Online's more frequent updates needed extra resources. CEO Strauss Zelnick answered:

"Generally speaking, our update cadence for GTA Online has been pretty stable. And some of the updates have been amazing. Some have been less successful. But generally speaking, consumers really love them. But the cadence hasn't really changed, and we do apply significant resources to that, and we expect to continue to support GTA Online going forward."

On the same call Zelnick said that "13 years after GTA Online was launched" people "are still highly engaged", and that GTA+ "continues to thrive". The transcript is from The Motley Fool; GodisaGeek reported the same answer.

GTA 6 pre-orders still sell GTA Online

Every digital pre-order of GTA 6, Standard or Ultimate, comes with one month of GTA+. GTA+ is not a GTA 6 feature: the Xbox Store calls it "the premium Membership for GTA Online players". On PlayStation the month can be claimed until March 31, 2027, and after it the membership renews at the normal monthly price unless you cancel. Rockstar is using its biggest launch to sign people up for the GTA Online membership. Details are on our GTA+ page.

Rockstar is still moving players to the newest version

Since June 18, 2026, anyone with GTA 5 on PS4 (disc or digital) or a digital copy on Xbox One can download the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version free, according to Rockstar Support, and IGN notes that GTA Online progress can be migrated across. Rockstar announced it alongside GTA Online's next heist, the Kortz Center Heist, which arrived on July 14.

The one time Rockstar did shut GTA Online down

Rockstar has closed GTA Online once, on the oldest consoles, and it gave about six months' notice:

Date What happened
June 16, 2021 Rockstar announced the end of online services for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions
September 16, 2021 Shark Cards stopped being sold on PS3 and Xbox 360
December 16, 2021 GTA Online closed on PS3 and Xbox 360; GTA 5's story mode kept working

Two details from Rockstar Support matter if it ever happens again. Characters could not be moved off the old consoles, and Shark Card money could not be refunded or carried over, because Rockstar treats virtual currency as tied to its platform. Our character transfer page covers what you can move today.

What happens to your GTA Online character when GTA 6 launches?

Nothing changes. Your character, money and properties stay in GTA Online on GTA 5, which keeps running. Rockstar has not announced any way to carry them into GTA 6 or a future GTA 6 online mode.

Our take: plan on GTA Online running well into 2027 at least. Take-Two calls it a game it expects to keep supporting, its CEO went out of his way to praise its engagement, and GTA 6 pre-orders hand out a GTA Online membership that PlayStation players can start as late as next March. If Rockstar does wind it down one day, its own record says you will get months of notice, not a surprise. The thing to be careful with is spending: we would not buy Shark Cards now in the hope that the money follows you into GTA 6, because nothing says it will.
