GTA 6 Online: Do You Need PS Plus or Game Pass?

You do not need PS Plus or Game Pass to play GTA 6. It launches on November 19, 2026 as a single-player game, and the PlayStation Store lists offline play as enabled. Whether GTA 6 Online will need PS Plus or Game Pass is unknown, because Rockstar has not announced an online mode yet.

What is known is how PlayStation and Xbox handle online play today, which is the rule any future GTA 6 online mode would start from.

The story mode: no subscription needed

The PlayStation Store lists GTA 6 as 1 player with offline play enabled, and the Xbox Store lists one capability, single player. Neither listing asks for PS Plus or Game Pass. You still need an internet connection to download the game and its updates, and PlayStation notes that online features need a PlayStation account, but neither is a paid subscription.

The platform rules for online play today

	PlayStation 5	Xbox Series X\|S
Playing GTA 6's story	No subscription	No subscription
Online play in a game you bought	"For the majority of games that you have purchased", a PS Plus membership is needed	Online console multiplayer is a Game Pass benefit
Online play in free-to-play games	"Most free to play games" need no membership	Open to every Xbox player
GTA 6 Online	Not announced	Not announced

Quotes from PlayStation's PS Plus page and Xbox's Game Pass plan comparison, read on the date at the bottom of this page. Every PS Plus plan, Essential included, comes with online multiplayer.

So the answer for GTA 6 Online depends on something Rockstar has not decided in public: whether it is part of a game you buy or a free-to-play game of its own. GTA Online on GTA 5 shows the usual case. The Xbox Store's own GTA+ listing warns that "online console play may require separate paid platform subscription".

Is GTA 6 on PS Plus or Game Pass?

No. Both stores sell GTA 6 at full price, from $79.99 in the US, and neither PlayStation nor Microsoft has announced it for its catalog. Our Game Pass rumor check has the history: GTA 5 joined Game Pass years after release.

GTA+ is not PS Plus

Digital GTA 6 pre-orders come with one month of GTA+, which is easy to mix up with PS Plus. GTA+ is Rockstar's own membership for GTA Online on GTA 5: it adds GTA$ and in-game perks, and it does not unlock online play on its own. Our GTA+ page covers what the free month gives you and how to cancel before it renews.

Our take: do not buy or renew PS Plus or Game Pass for GTA 6's launch. The story needs neither, and an online mode has not been announced, let alone dated. If Rockstar follows its GTA 5 setup, expect the usual platform subscription for online play, which is why it makes sense to wait for the announcement before you pay for a year of anything.
