The song

Wallen wrote it with John Byron, Chase McGill, Blake Pendergrass and Ryan Vojtesak (Charlie Handsome), and Joey Moi and Charlie Handsome produced it. It was written earlier in 2026 for Wallen's next album, and his team picked it for GTA because they felt it suited the game best. The lyric is about an on-and-off couple who know they are wrong for each other and keep coming back anyway; co-writer Blake Pendergrass compared the story to Jason and Lucia. It debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 dated October 3, on 14.4 million US streams in its first full tracking week (Billboard). Reviewers described a synth-backed, pop-leaning sound with a little more twang than his recent singles.

Why a country star is on a GTA album

Pitchfork's review of another single placed Wallen's song with the "northern folk" of Grassrivers, Leonida's Everglades. Rockstar's own region pages and Game Informer's map story, covered in our map size guide, back up the idea that GTA 6 has a large rural side: Ambrosia's biker gang, Grassrivers' wetlands and Mount Kalaga National Park, which Game Informer places on Leonida's version of the Florida-Georgia line (via Screen Rant).

Our take: of the six singles, this one tells us most about the parts of Leonida away from Vice City. A country-pop song about a couple who cannot quit each other is close to a summary of the game's story, which is presumably why Pendergrass made the comparison. Rockstar has since confirmed a country station, Back Country Radio, co-hosted by Wallen and Lana Del Rey, but has not said whether "Last Thing You Need" plays on it. A Hot 100 top 10 within weeks also shows how far the album reaches beyond gamers.
