Go diving under the sea. Rockstar says you can meet sharks, whales, rays, turtles and jellyfish down there.

What we know

Scuba diving is one of the side activities Rockstar named in Game Informer's cover story, and Rockstar said that while diving you can meet several shark species, jellyfish, whales, turtles and rays, each with "distinct movement behavior" (IGN, VICE). In An Extended Look, Lucia dives (Sportskeeda) with an oxygen meter on the HUD, in a sea IGN calls "gorgeously lit and incredibly vibrant with life".

What you'll see down there

Sea life Rockstar or outlets have named Our page
Several shark species Sharks
Whales Whales
Rays Rays
Turtles Sea turtles
Jellyfish Jellyfish
Manatees (Polygon) Manatees

Game Informer adds that some animals show iridescence, bioluminescence and translucency, and Polygon notes some marine animals glow. Fish are there too, but fishing is separate: Rob Nelson told TGG it is catch and release only (GameSpot).

Where to dive

The Leonida Keys are the obvious first stop. Their real model, the Florida Keys, hold the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States, according to NOAA's Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, plus shipwrecks divers visit. Rockstar's own pitch for the Keys promises "some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in all of America" (as IGN quotes it).

Compared with GTA 5

Scuba is a returning activity: GTA 5's first gameplay video in 2013 showed scuba diving next to golf and shopping (CBS News). GTA 6's version adds named species with their own movement, and an oxygen meter you'll need to watch.

Our take: scuba diving looks like GTA 6's best nature activity, and the place where Rockstar's 170-species promise will be easiest to judge. Start in shallow reef water around the Keys rather than open sea, keep one eye on the oxygen meter, and treat sharks as dangerous until you know otherwise. If studying works underwater, a single reef dive could fill a big chunk of the animal checklist. Rockstar hasn't said whether there is treasure or collectibles on the sea floor, so we'd dive for the view first and the loot second.

What to watch for at launch

  • How long the oxygen lasts, and whether better gear extends it.
  • Whether there are wrecks, treasure or collectibles to find.
  • Whether sea animals can be studied for the checklist.
