Jason's "Let Freedom Reign!" shirt on release day

Shown in trailers

In Trailer 2, Jason waits at the prison gate in a T-shirt that reads "Let Freedom Reign!", then Lucia walks out past the chain-link fence. A watchtower stands over the yard a few shots earlier.

Where to pause

Trailer 2 builds Lucia's release as a short sequence. A watchtower stands over the prison yard at 0:50. At 1:02 Jason waits at the gate, and his T-shirt reads "Let Freedom Reign!". At 1:04 Lucia walks out past the chain-link fence. All three timestamps link to Rockstar's own upload, so you can check the shirt yourself.

The joke

It works on two levels. "Let Freedom Reign" is a patriotic, flag-waving slogan, the kind of shirt you'd find at a Florida gas station, and Jason is wearing it to collect his partner from prison: the most literal "freedom" day of her life. It also fits Jason. Rockstar's bio says he "grew up around grifters and crooks", did a stint in the Army, and now works for drug runners in the Keys; Dexerto spotted a tattoo in Trailer 2 that suggests he served in a parachute unit. A loud patriotic shirt on an ex-soldier turned smuggler's helper is very Rockstar.

Why the scene matters

The shirt is a gag, but the moment is a story beat. Rockstar's bio for Lucia says "sheer luck" got her out of the Leonida Penitentiary and that "a life with Jason could be her way out". IGN's preview adds that Lucia's ankle tag "is key to how she and Jason are brought together". So Jason waiting at the gate is the start of the partnership the whole game is built on.

Detail Trailer 2 timestamp
Watchtower over the yard 0:50
Jason at the gate in the shirt 1:02
Lucia walks out 1:04

Our take: this is our favourite small joke in the trailers, because it tells you who Jason is without a line of dialogue: sincere, a little corny, and already committed to Lucia before the story starts. The shirt will almost certainly be a wearable item somewhere in Leonida's clothing stores, and we'd bet on players hunting for it on day one. That is a guess; Rockstar hasn't listed it.

What to watch for at launch

  • Whether the shirt is sold in a clothing store, or unlocked by the story.
  • Whether the release scene is a playable mission or a cutscene.
  • What else is printed on the back of the shirt.
