A TV in Trailer 2 plays an ad for Phil's Ammu-Nation, the series' gun store chain, fronted by a mulleted man at a counter of guns. Fans read him as Phil Cassidy, the arms dealer from GTA Vice City; Rockstar hasn't said who he is.
Where to pause
At 2:14 in Trailer 2, a TV plays a commercial for "Phil's Ammu-Nation". A heavy-set man with a mullet stands at a counter full of guns, fires a gun and plays up to the camera; Kotaku and Dexerto both flagged the ad, and Dexerto spotted a PS5 next to the TV. The link above opens Rockstar's upload at that second.
Who Phil Cassidy was
Phil Cassidy is one of GTA's oldest supporting characters. Radio Times traces him to GTA 3 (2001), where Claude meets a one-armed gun dealer in the mission "Arms Shortage", and to GTA Vice City (2002), set in 1986, which shows how he lost the arm. Screen Rant counts appearances in GTA 3 and four later games, all in what fans call the 3D universe, and none in a mainline game after GTA 3 itself. In Vice City you could buy weapons at Phil's Place, which Tommy didn't own (GTABase).
Same Phil, or not?
| For | Against |
|---|---|
| The store has his first name, and Ammu-Nation usually carries no owner's name (Screen Rant) | The man in the ad has both arms; Phil famously lost one (Radio Times) |
| The look, the gun counter and the Vice City setting all fit | His hair is dark rather than blond (Screen Rant) |
| IGN's Matt Purslow lists "Phil Cassidy selling lethal merchandise" among GTA 6's Vice City echoes | GTA 6 belongs to the HD universe, a separate continuity from the 3D-era games (Screen Rant) |
Screen Rant floats a middle option from Reddit: the man could be Phil's son, named after him.
Our take: we think this is Phil Cassidy, rebooted for the HD universe rather than carried over. Rockstar has done this kind of soft return before with places like Vice City itself, and a gun-store owner named Phil, with that haircut, in Vice City, is too pointed to be a coincidence. The two arms are the tell that he's a new version, not the 1986 character aged forty years. For players, the practical upshot is small: Ammu-Nation stores exist in Leonida either way, as Rockstar's Ultimate Edition copy confirms. The fun question is whether Phil shows up in person, perhaps at a store counter, or stays a TV face. We'd bet on at least one cameo.
What to watch for at launch
- Whether Phil appears in person, and whether he gives missions.
- Whether the game ever says his surname.
- Whether his ad plays on in-game TV with more lines.
