Artist
Phil Collins

Phil Collins' "Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)" plays inside the Megamundo building in An Extended Look, in a lift, right after Jason drops Lucia, Petra and Valentina on one of the floors. By Game Rant's timestamps it runs for only about 23 seconds (21:33 to 21:56), one of the shortest stretches any song gets in the video.

The song

Collins wrote it for the 1984 film Against All Odds. It became the first of his seven solo No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, reached No. 2 in the UK, won him a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male, and was nominated for an Academy Award (American Songwriter, Billboard, the UK chart archive, Grammy.com, Oscars.org). The lyric is a plea to an ex who has walked away.

Phil Collins and Vice City go back

This is not Collins' first GTA appearance. In Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, set in 1984, a virtual Phil Collins takes the stage to perform "In the Air Tonight", as Kotaku recalls. Kotaku called the new choice "ominous" for Jason and Lucia.

Why it fits

The song plays at the exact moment the couple split up inside the building, Lucia stepping off on one floor while Jason rides on. A breakup ballad shrunk to a few seconds of lift music is also a very Rockstar joke.

Our take: we read it as a wink first and a warning second. Fans of the series get a Vice City callback, everyone else gets a gag, and the lyric adds a little dread to a job that armed attackers later interrupt, according to IGN's rundown of the video. Do not read it as a spoiler about the couple's ending; Rockstar has said nothing about how the story ends. Whether Collins has anything else in GTA 6, such as a song on a station, is not confirmed. We will check at launch.
