Love Bites

"Love Bites" by Def Leppard plays inside Jason and Lucia's apartment in An Extended Look, in a quiet domestic stretch before the two head out. By Game Rant's timestamps it starts at 6:43 and runs for about 42 seconds.

The song

"Love Bites" is a power ballad from Def Leppard's 1987 album Hysteria, released as a single in 1988. It hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1988, the band's first and only chart-topper there (Billboard). Producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange first presented it as a country-tinged acoustic ballad, and the band reworked it into the power ballad on the record (Ultimate Classic Rock).

A love song with a warning in it

The lyric is about jealousy and suspicion inside a relationship, the dark side of being in love. It plays at home, in the one part of the footage where Jason and Lucia are just a couple rather than partners in crime. Count the titles and a pattern appears. "Love Is a Long Road", "Let Your Love Flow" and "Love Bites" all have love in the name, and "Hot Together" carried Trailer 2. Rockstar's music keeps returning to the relationship at the center of the game.

Our take: putting an 80s power ballad in the apartment says Jason and Lucia's home life will have its own soundtrack, not only the car radio. A song about love that hurts is a smart choice for a story where, the previews say, the couple's relationship can be built up or damaged by how you play. Rockstar has not said whether the song comes from a radio, a TV or the score in this scene, so we cannot place it on a station yet. We will add that after launch.
